WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – August is National Tree Check month.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Washington Invasive Species Council is asking residents to check their trees, water features and outdoor fixtures for invasive species.

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz says Washington state is currently facing outbreaks of invasive species and disease that constitutes a forest health crisis.

Some invasive species to look for include the Asian Longhorned Beetle, Asian Spongy Moth, Spotted Lantern Fly and Sooty Bark Disease.

Owners of forests on private land may be eligible for financial assistance to help maintain healthy trees.
