OLYMPIA, WASH. (AP) – The state Legislature passed a bill that sets standards for when and how dogs can be left on a leash.

The measure now heads to Governor Jay Inslee for his signature.

Under the legislation, if a dog owner decides to leave their canine for a period of time, they must provide food, water, shelter and give the pooch enough space to move around.

It also gives animal care and control officers the ability to issue a civil infraction or warning for inhumane animal tethering.
