OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Department of Justice is awarding more than $1.5 million to Washington school districts to combat school violence.

The department says $1 million will go to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to fund efforts to provide teachers and students with the tools they need to recognize and respond quickly to prevent acts of violence.

Smaller grants will go to school districts to support students, teachers and law enforcement partnerships.

The DOJ says funds cannot be used to provide firearms or firearm use training to any personnel.
