LUMMI NATION, Wash. — The Lummi and Nooksack Indian Tribes are receiving more than a half-million dollars in federal grants to improve public safety.

They are among 133 American Indian and Alaska Native communities sharing $246 million in grants from the Department of Justice’s.

The Lummi Nation will receive $450,000 for their Violence Against Women Tribal Governments Program.

The Nooksack Tribe will receive $241,211 for Public Safety and Community Policing.

The DOJ says the grants, many of which come from the Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation Program (CTAS), are aimed at improving public safety, reducing violence against women and helping victims of crime in native communities.

On their website, the Department of Justice say they launched CTAS in 2010 in direct response to concerns raised by tribal leaders about the Department’s grant process that did not provide the flexibility tribes needed to address their criminal justice and public safety needs.
