WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Domestic assault and threats of suicide were behind a stand-off at a travel trailer in Maple Falls Tuesday.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s office says 53 year old John Miller had been exhibiting mental health and substance abuse issues for a couple of days.

He then assaulted his live-in girlfriend and her daughter on Tuesday before barricading himself inside the trailer and threatening suicide with a knife he was holding.

Officers used non-lethal force to subdue Miller after a lengthy stand-off that affected school bus operation from Kendall Elementary.

He suffered minor self-inflicted cuts to his neck, was treated at Peacehealth St. Joseph Medical Center and taken to jail.
