TACOMA, WASH. (AP) – Dozens of babies have been surrendered to the state under a law that allows parents to bring newborns to hospitals and fire stations.

Of the 43 babies relinquished under the “Safe Haven” law from 2009 to 2016, 34 were left at hospitals.

The News Tribune reports the law only applies to children up to three days old.

Parents of older kids can call a state hotline, 866-END-HARM for help with mental health and substance abuse issues.
