OLYMPIA, Wash. — $1 million in federal funding will go towards restoring a coastal wetland in Bellingham.
The state Department of Ecology will use these funds to work with the City of Bellingham in restoring the Little Squalicum Estuary, which is just east of the Nooksack River delta.
The project will restore important ecological processes, remove a fish passage barrier at the mouth of Little Squalicum Creek and re-establish a 2.4-acre estuary that will provide habitat for endangered juvenile Chinook salmon, steelhead and bull trout, and Coho salmon.
Recreational activities will also be redirected to more ecologically-appropriate parts of Little Squalicum Park.
