OLYMPIA, Wash. — The state Department of Ecology is recommending drastic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions across the state.
Andrew Wineke with Ecology says it’s based on research by University of Washington and international scientists that finds the current rate of warming will lead to big decreases in the state’s snowpack and streamflows and a big rise in sea level.
Governor Inslee released legislation Thursday aimed at achieving that goal.
It includes clean fuel standards, more availability of zero-emission vehicles, extending a tax incentive for community investment in solar for low income residents and other measures.
Inslee says it’s time to treat “climate change like the crisis it is.”
