If you’re taking a ferry this Labor Day weekend, you’ll want to plan ahead for potential service disruptions.

WSDOT says strict protocols are in place for Washington State Ferry employees and positive COVID cases could lead to delays or cancellations.

The system is also facing a shortage of experienced employees and an overall staffing shortage, which has forced the ferry system to modify some scheduled routes.

In addition, they are not taking any new vehicle reservations for either the Anacortes-San Juan Islands or Port Townsend-Coupeville trips between Friday, September 3rd and Monday, September 6th.

WSF head Patty Rubstello says crews are working overtime to fill holes created by employees forced to quarantine but they’re struggling to recruit new employees and qualified mariners.
