BILLINGS, Mon. — As Washington voters consider a carbon tax on industrial emitters, Exxon’s view on the situation seems to have changed.

The Wall Street Journal reports the oil company will commit $1 million over two years to promote a national tax on carbon.

The initiative Exxon is backing is said to be designed to appeal to Republicans who now control Congress.

A group called Americans for Carbon Dividends headed by former Republican Senate majority leader Trent Lott will lead the lobbying efforts contributions such as Exxon’s will fund.
