BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The family of a man who died while in Bellingham Police custody in 2018 is claiming $1 million in damages.

Joshua Eldard made the claim in a precursor to a lawsuit with the City of Bellingham over the death.

The Bellingham Herald reports that on March 14, 2018 local authorities responded to a call regarding a man exhibiting signs of mental and medical crisis.

The claim states less than eight minutes passed from the time Robert Eldard was restrained to the ground to the time he lost consciousness.

The Whatcom County Medical Examiner found cardiac complications caused by acute methamphetamine use led to Robert Eldard’s death.

City officials have not yet responded to the Eldard family’s claim.
