HURRICANE MILLS, TN. – You’ve no doubt heard of the death of Country Music legend Loretta Lynn on Tuesday, October 4th.
You may not know that she lived in Whatcom County and discovered her talent here before going big-time.
Lynn and her husband lived in Custer during the 1950’s and got her music career started in grange halls across Whatcom County.
And she performed at the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden a handful of times after her career took off.
Historians also note that she was renowned for more than just her music in Whatcom County.
She also took home 17 blue ribbons from the Northwest Washington Fair for her canned fruits and vegetables.
Lynn and her family moved out of Whatcom County in 1961, when her first single- “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl”- broke into the Billboard Country charts.
