OLYMPIA, Wash. – There’s been a sharp increase in the number of fatal motorcycle crashes on Washington roads this spring.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission has tallied 24 fatal motorcycle accidents so far this year, and riders accounted for almost half of all traffic deaths in the month of April.

Mark Medalen with the commission says the rider was usually at fault. He says, “in the cases that we are seeing this year, the 24 fatalities, 18 of those were caused by the riders high speed, missing corners, missing curbs, things like that.”

He says all riders should take a motorcycle safety course and get certified.
