BELLINGHAM, Wash. — President Trump signed a Major Disaster Declaration for Washington that includes Whatcom County.
John Gargett with Whatcom Emergency Management says this will provide federal assistance for repair and recovery from the storms in December, which he estimates caused between $4 and 5 million in damages.
The declaration allows nonprofits to be reimbursed, such as the Opportunity Council which ran the emergency shelter in Kendall.
Private nonprofits can currently apply for funds here, where the SBA will then determine if they qualify for disaster loan assistance, or even a Public Assistance grant from FEMA.
The declaration does not include assistance for individuals, homeowners or businesses.
