OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) – Deaths from the powerful opioid fentanyl and fentanyl-related drugs appear to be on the rise in our state.

Pam lost her son to fentanyl.

“My son OD’d, after having been clean 10 and a half months, OD’d on a drug that was laced with fentanyl.”

An investigation by several state agencies found at least 70 people died from the synthetic opioid in 2016.

Direct comparisons between 2015 and 2016 aren’t possible because the state changed its testing protocol, but it appears there were about 17 fewer deaths in 2015.
