FERNDALE, Wash. — The Ferndale Food Bank is holding a special distribution for local federal employees who are going without a paycheck during the government shutdown.
Executive Director Suzanne Nevan says she was inspired to reach out to them after chatting about the shutdown with a border agent while returning to the U.S. from Canada.
“The agent basically said, “I’m working without a paycheck, but I don’t worry about myself because I’m a single household . . . I can live off Top Ramen if I have to, but what I’m really worried about are my colleagues that have family,'” Nevan says.
The distribution is for federal employees living in the Ferndale distribution area which includes the Ferndale School District, the northern tip of Bellingham, and Custer.
Federal workers just need to bring work ID or a pay stub to the event next Tuesday, January 22, from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Ferndale Food Bank on 1671 Main Street.
