Tuesday was a big day for Ferndale Schools as they broke ground on the new high school project.

The groundbreaking ceremony on Memorial field was a socially-distanced event that featured student and district leaders, the Chairman of the Lummi Nation, and the high school cheerleaders and band.

Since the total cost estimate of the project is approximately $1.8 million below budget, the optional auxiliary gym has been included in the project with $500,000 to spare in the budget.

The $124 million project will replace all buildings except for the Performing Arts Center and upgrade the existing stadium, ball field and track.

Substantial completion is expected by September 2023 with final completion a couple of months later.
