WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Fires that people have been reporting on Lookout Mountain south of Bellingham are permitted controlled burns.

Rich Dodd, Wildfire District Manager for the Department of Natural Resources, says the deparment  permits loggers to burn logging debris during the cold wet months to reduce its fire danger during the dry summer months and to clear land to plant new trees.

He says the permitted fires are suspended below 2000 feet until December 12th because a forecast temperature inversion could hold smoke close to the ground, causing poor air quality.
