ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia – The storm and flooding that left thousands reeling in Whatcom County is causing what’s being called an agriculture disaster north of the border.

The CBC reports hundreds of farms in lower B.C. have been flooded with many of them in the Fraser Valley.

Thousands of animals have died on flooded farms in the low-lying Sumas Prairie east of Abbotsford.

People have used boats, Jet Skis and even hovercraft to rescue animals that are many farmers’ livelihood.

But many of the animals that have been saved are in poor condition.

The area is home to about half of all the dairy farms in British Columbia.

The Vancouver Sun reports the Canadian Army will begin building a two-kilometer levee on Friday, November 19th, to help deal with a broken dike that’s allowing water to continue pouring into the Sumas Prairie.
