DARRINGTON, Wash. – The U.S. Forest Service is giving the OK to more seismic monitors on Glacier Peak.
There’s currently just one monitor on the North Cascades volcano, which is classified as one of the most dangerous in the United States.
The service determined the seismometers will not have a significant impact on the environment and will give scientists and the public more warning of a possible eruption.
The Everett Herald reports Glacier Peak is estimated to be the 15th deadliest volcano in the nation.
Scientists says a present-day eruption could devastate communities like Darrington, which is home to about 1000 people.
