MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A federal court indicted a former Skagit County sheriff’s deputy for wire fraud on Thursday.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports Brian Lehr was the treasurer of the Pacific Northwest Police Detection Dog Association and is accused of stealing more than $35,000 since at least 2010.

Lehr was replaced as treasurer in May 2015 and his successor told the sheriff’s office about inconsistencies in the organization’s files and system.

Lehr was put on leave that December during an internal and FBI investigation.

Skagit County Sheriff Will Reichardt told the Skagit Valley Herald, “We have to be above reproach and anything less is not acceptable.”
