Just days before his trial would have started, a former Skagit County sheriff’s deputy pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a firearm.

Russell Whitmore was accused of choking his wife and threatening to shoot both her and himself.

In court Thursday, the Skagit Valley Herald reports Whitmore claimed to have no memory of the event and felt he would be found guilty if the case went to trial.

Whitmore was arrested and charged in January with unlawful imprisonment, assault and assault with a weapon, but the remaining charges were dropped under a plea deal.
