FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. – A Goldendoodle is being trained to help people with Parkinson’s disease.
Her owner Carolyn Haugen tells KING-5 she’s very proud.
“It’s very heartwarming, and I’m happy that she could be a part of it.”
Lisa Holt is the founder of Parkinson’s Alert Dogs in Friday Harbor.
She’s teaching dogs smell out Parkinson’s.
She tells KING dogs are already detecting other diseases with their noses.
“Three to four different kinds of cancer, they’re working with, and proven to detect. So no, it’s not crazy stuff at all.”
One of the symptoms of Parkinson’s is a secretion through the skin.
People can’t smell it, but dogs can.
Early detection can add years of quality time to patients’ lives.
