BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Bellingham Christian day camp has turned away a prospective counselor because he is gay.

Jace Taylor says The Firs hired him to be a counselor at Fircreek Day Camp last month but told him that he was being terminated after they learned about his sexual orientation through social media.

The 18-year-old tells Q13 that he’s devastated.

“I wanted to bawl my eyes out because all my life I’ve wanted to work as a Fircreek camp counselor . . .  and make an impact on kids like they did when I was younger,” he said

FIRS executive director Tom Beaumont said in a statement that while they love Jace they could not accept him as a counselor.

“When it became evident in the application process that he did not personally align with our statements of faith (in particular, one regarding sexuality), we determined we could not use him in this role,” wrote Beaumont.

Taylor says he’s struggled with being gay, but finally came out last year with the support of his family.
