Whatcom County’s red raspberry haul was down this year after 2016’s record crop, but local farmers say the problem is a global one.
Washington Red Raspberry Commission Executive Director Henry Bierlink said global competitors are exporting red raspberries at cheaper prices.
Bierlink notes that while Whatcom County and Washington as a whole dominate in national raspberry crops, foreign competitors are pushing them out.
The WRRC is taking legal action to improve U.S. trade laws, Bierlink said.
The WRRC is planning a large conference at the end of the month to talk about the issues further.
