BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Governor Jay Inslee is preparing to tackle reproductive rights as the start of the 2023 legislative session quickly approaches.

Speaking at WWU on Friday, October 21st, the Governor said he wants to propose a constitutional amendment that would ensure everyone has the right to abortion access.

“This right needs to be enshrined in the basic foundational document of the state of Washington,” said Inslee. “And that is our constitution. It is the place where we show immutable commitment of our fundamental rights. And the right of a woman to exercise her private right of this most intimate decision, is a fundamental right that needs to be protected in the Washington state constitution.”

The same amendment would also ensure the right of people to use or refuse contraceptive services.

KING 5 reports that the amendment would need to be approved by a two-thirds majority in the state House and Senate.

Voters would also need to approve the changes to the state constitution.

Inslee was joined by other state legislators at this morning’s press conference, including 42nd District Representative Sharon Shewmake.
