OLYMPIA, Wash. – Gov. Jay Inslee says he is talking to lawmakers about possibly delaying a mandatory payroll tax to fund Washington state’s new long-term care program.

He says he doesn’t have the authority to make changes to the law himself.

“I’m talking to legislators about other approaches that can allow them to pause, if you will, some of the actions,” said Inslee. “To allow them to make changes to the bill.”

The tax is set to start in January for most employees in the state.

Senate Democratic leadership sent Inslee a letter this week asking him to put the tax off until 2023 so they can address concerns about the program.
