BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood and the City Council are trying to calm a furor over changes to the city’s Emergency Ordinance.
Rumors swirling on social media and elsewhere claim the city is moving to ban guns, which Fleetwood says in a statement is untrue.
He says the proposed changes to the ordinance outlining the emergency powers of the mayor are “procedural in nature.”
He says the changes would make the mayor’s office more responsive to emergency needs while keeping checks and balances in place.
Residents are urged to stay away from tonight’s (Monday) meeting as strict attendance rules are in effect and no public comment will be taken.
It will be televised live on BTV and online and residents are asked to contact the council by phone, email or letter.
