BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A local healthcare center that’s seen an outbreak of coronavirus-related illnesses and deaths is responding to a Bellingham Herald article pointing out past problems at the facility.

The Herald reported Sunday on a number of financial and management problems Shuksan Healthcare Center had as recently as last year.

Those included difficulty making lease payments and paying back taxes along with staffing and procedural problems.

Shuksan says on its Facebook page that the complaints highlighted by the newspaper occurred under previous ownership and all violations have either been resolved or are on a plan to be corrected, and none are linked to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The facility says that information is available on the Medicare website.

Shuksan has seen a rash of coronavirus infections and six residents have died.
