OLYMPIA, Wash. — Collection sites around Washington brought in more than eight tons of unwanted prescription drugs during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 27th.

Local law enforcement and the DEA have collected nearly 12 million pounds of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs since 2010.

Of the Pacific Northwest states including Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska, Washington brought in the most, but Idaho and Alaska set personal records with how much they brought in.

Drug Take Back Day is meant to raise awareness of addiction and overdose deaths by urging people to clean out their medicine cabinets so prescriptions don’t get into the wrong hands.
