BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police arrested a driver suspected of being under the influence of drugs when he hit a bicycle rider and another vehicle before fleeing the scene Saturday morning.

Lieutenant Claudia Murphy reports that officers responded to reports of a bicyclist being hit from behind by a pick-up truck on James Street near Bakerview just after 10:30 a.m.

Witnesses said the truck also hit another vehicle before the driver fled and they provided a license plate number.

Officers located 34-year-old Charles Clifford Chapman at a fast food restaurant on Bakerview and arrested him as he tried to hide evidence of the collision.

The bicycle rider suffered minor injuries and the driver of the other vehicle wasn’t hurt.
