WOODINVILLE, Wash. – Seven horses have been euthanized in King County as a rare and deadly virus sweeps through.
Gold Creek Equine Center co-owner Mike Adams tells KIRO the center is working closely with the State Department of Agriculture as they combat the highly contagious virus.
The center in Woodinville says the EHV-1 neurological virus doesn’t respond to vaccines.
The virus can stay dormant in a horse for years, but surface after stress.
Both sick and healthy horses are being quarantined from each other using tarps, while owners and staff are required to wear hazmat suits, spray the stalls with bleach and disinfect both shoes and car tires before leaving.
