BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Rising rents and low vacancy rates are seeing more schoolchildren living in unstable situations.
According to Washington’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, about one Washington public school student in 25 is homeless.
The state legislature renewed grants created in 2016’s House Bill 1682 this year to assist those students.
Bellingham organizations received nearly a quarter of a million dollars to assist homeless students. OSPI granted $52,228 to Bellingham Consortia. Washington’s Department of Commerce granted $195,000 to Bellingham Public Schools, partnering with the Opportunity Council and Northwest Youth Services.
