OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Governor Inslee approved legislation allowing human remains to be composted.
Licensed facilities in Washington can now turn human remains into two wheelbarrows worth of soil in a few weeks, by mixing it with substances like wood chips and straw to speed up the process.
Loved ones are able to keep the soil just as they might spread the ashes of someone who was cremated.
The law will take effect May 2020.
