BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Whatcom Human Rights Task Force published an open letter that they sent to Whatcom County officials regarding the homelessness crisis.

In the letter sent to mayors and city councils in Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, and more, they ask local officials and affiliated agencies to take meaningful, consistent action and planning on the issue.

“We understand and appreciate that you have made more resources available to support those without shelter in our community during the recent snow storm, but we believe that there must be more done on an ongoing basis to house those in need, and not only during emergencies,” it says.

The main request from the group is for more social housing units, which accommodate individuals experiencing homelessness including couples and those of non-binary gender.
