BELLINGHAM, Wash. — This time of year many people like to give live animals like bunnies and chicks as gifts, but Whatcom Humane Society Executive Director Laura Clark says people often don’t know what they’re getting into with unconventional pets.

“[People] see the little chicks and baby bunnies in the stores….and who doesn’t want one. They’re adorable, right? But what we see about six weeks after the Easter holiday is when they start rolling into animal shelters,” she says.

She recommends getting information on how to care for animals at your local shelter, feed store or websites like the House Rabbit Society.

But she says most should stick with inanimate gifts.

“A stuffed animal or a chocolate bunny for a young child in the household is going to be enjoyed just as much,” she says.

Clark also warns to keep Easter lilies away from pets as they’re very toxic, especially for cats.
