NORTH WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Recovery efforts continued through Saturday in the wake of an unexpectedly harsh ice storm that hit the region Friday night.

Multiple roads in the Lynden and Sumas areas were closed to assist with the clearing of storm related debris.

John Gargett of the Whatcom Division of Emergency Management says there were no reports of major property damage or injury. You can hear his full update from Saturday morning here.

He says the best thing north Whatcom County residents can do is to stay off the roads in the affected areas to give crews a chance to deal with downed trees and broken power poles.

As of 2pm Saturday about 10,000 PSE customers statewide were reported without power, with about 6,000 of the total impacting Whatcom and Skagit County communities.
