WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Meteorologists are warning that the incoming heatwave could have a significant effect on wildfires in the Pacific northwest.

Accuweather reports that temperatures are projected to reach 10 to 20 degrees above average by midweek and could reach the highs we experienced during the last wave in July.

Temperatures will reach the low 90s in parts of Whatcom County by this Thursday, August 18th.

The extreme heat should subside by the weekend for those of us west of the cascades, but will most likely persist longer inland.

The concern with wildfires lies in a disturbance in the jet stream that could bring enough moisture from the southwest to cause thunderstorms bringing lightning strikes with little to no rain.
