SEATTLE, Wash. — Proposals like one forwarded to the Bellingham City Council to phase out the use of natural gas to heat homes and water are prompting the industry to launch a counter public relations campaign.

The Seattle Times reports natural gas companies are joining with business and consumer groups and unions to form a coalition called “Partners for Energy Progress” aimed at defeating the initiatives and promoting the benefits of natural gas.

They’re beginning with a $1 million campaign to tout natural gas as a positive component in the fight against climate change.

Gas does release roughly 50% less carbon emissions than coal when used in power generation, but environmentalists point out that burning gas also releases powerful heat-trapping methane.

The governor’s office reports that natural gas use in buildings produces 27% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions and is the fastest growing source.

The industry says gas is good for consumers and points to the satisfaction people get from turning on and cooking with their gas stoves.
