OLYMPIA, Wash. — Governor Jay Inslee has asked Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau to find a solution for Point Roberts residents who are essentially stranded due to the US/Canada border closure.

Because of the community’s geography, the approximately 1,300 Whatcom County residents who live there cannot travel by land to the U.S. without crossing the international boarder, which was closed to nonessential travel in March due to COVID-19.

The closure is set to last through September 21st.

Inslee suggests one solution would be a transit pass similar to the one used for Americans traveling by land to Alaska.

He says that by displaying an approved pass, Point Roberts residents could travel to and from mainland Washington through the Peace Arch Border Crossing.
