OLYMPIA, WASH. (AP) – A bill to make tsunami evacuation and earthquake drills mandatory for all schools didn’t make it through the state legislature.

The governor signed a watered-down version that makes earthquake drills optional.

Legislation requiring seismic evaluations of school buildings and other earthquake related measures died in the legislature.

The Seattle Times reports lawmakers did little to address earthquake risks in Washington, which are ranked second only to California.
