ANACORTES, Wash. — Officials just found a highly invasive species in the waters of Skagit County.

New Zealand Mud Snails were detected in Big Indian Slough.

Skagit County says on a Facebook post the invasive snails are a threat to all aquatic species in the county’s freshwater and brackish water environments.

The tiny critters can outcompete local species and negatively impact fish populations.

They’re urging everyone to decontaminate any gear used in Big Indian Slough and nearby surface waters.
