OLYMPIA, Wash. — As we approach the tax-filing extension deadline of October 15, the IRS is warning taxpayers to beware of scams that can become more prevalent during this time, and others that take advantage of a bad situation.

The IRS says scammers are still making threatening phone calls and emails under the guise of the IRS, while others are posing as charities amid hurricane season.

You’re urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious calls, emails and donation requests to the IRS.

A recommended resource when considering a donation to hurricane relief efforts is the website Charity Navigator, which allows you to look up information on any charity to verify their credibility and integrity.
