SEQUIM, Wash. — Raw milk gave two Washington residents food poisoning.

The Washington Department of Health reports a young child from Island County and an elderly Clallam County resident became ill with an E. coli infection after drinking raw milk from Sequim’s Dungeness Valley Creamery.

Epidemiologist Dr. Scott Lindquist says illness can occur because raw milk doesn’t go through the pasteurization process where harmful germs and bacteria are destroyed.

Young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems may be at a greater risk.

If untreated, E. coli infections can lead to kidney failure.
