VALLETTA, Malta – A woman from Issaquah was airlifted to Spain after suffering an incomplete miscarriage while vacationing in Malta.

The island nation does not allow abortion under any circumstance and the hospital that is treating her cannot perform the surgery she needs.

Her husband says she is at risk of life-threatening infection if the surgery is not done quickly.

He says the presence of a fetal heartbeat does not allow the remainder of the fetus to be removed under Maltese law.

Andrea Prudente was 16 weeks pregnant when bleeding began and Spain allows abortion up to 22 weeks if the mother’s life or health are in danger.
