ACME, Wash. – A two-alarm fire that was possibly caused by fireworks damaged part of a Whatcom County elementary school’s playground.

Fire District 16 Chief Hank Maleng says witnesses saw smoke coming from the Acme Elementary School area around 8 pm on Monday night, July 4th.

Maleng initially believed the fire had started on the roof of an older school building, which was built in the 1930s and didn’t have a working sprinkler system.

Crews arriving on scene found that the fire had only impacted the school’s playground.

The fire caused about $2,500 in damages to the school property, but no one was injured.

Maleng says fireworks may have sparked the blaze.
