MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Jury selection is underway in the trial of a man accused of shooting a Mount Vernon police officer.
The charges against 47-year-old Ernesto Rivas are related to the December 2016 shooting of officer Michael McClaughry that left him blind.
169 potential jurors reportedly filed into the Skagit County public hearing rooms Wednesday.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports that’s the largest jury pool ever assembled in the county.
Jury selection is expected to go through this week, with opening arguments set to begin early next week.
