KENT, WASH. – A 20-year tradition for the Kentlake High School band comes to an end over fears for its undocumented students.
The band’s yearly performance in Victoria, B.C. was canceled when the Kent School Board ended all international field trips since undocumented students could get held up at the border.
Christine Mastroff is a parent and believes this was a political move that came too late for the band to adjust.
“They didn’t give us time to find a different venue or different way to pay for the trip and go outside of Kentlake. That’s what’s disheartening,” Mastroff says.
But, the district’s Chris Loftis says it was necessary.
“Sometimes as a culture and a society, we have to sacrifice as individuals for the greater good. We feel that that’s the case here,” Loftis says.
