SEATTLE, Wash. — King County is suing five major oil companies, including ConocoPhillips, after it says the companies deliberately looked to downplay and discredit scientific warnings about the risks of global warming.
The Hill reports the county wants financial compensation for what it says it has and will spend on sea-level management, extreme weather and other effects of climate change.
BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and Royal Dutch are the other companies listed in the lawsuit.
The Manufacturers’ Accountability Project denounced the lawsuit saying lawsuits targeting manufacturers do nothing to address climate change, but will do plenty to line the pockets of plaintiffs’ attorneys.
