FRIDAY HARBOR,Wash. — Three whale watching companies are suing to stop an initiative that would expand buffer zones for boats around endangered Puget Sound orcas.
The Seattle Times reports the San Juan County initiative would keep boats 650 yards from southern resident orcas while they’re in county waters.
The state recently passed limits of 300 to 400 yards.
Whale watching companies Pacific Cruises Northwest, Island Adventures, and Puget Sound Express joined the suit which claims local governments can’t enact stricter measures than the state.
“The state has already acted; it is not open to the counties, cities and towns to make it more restrictive,” argued Bellingham-based attorney Frank Chmelik.
Organizers have until July 8 to gather enough signatures to get the measure on the November ballot.
